โปรแกรมลูกหมายถึง การที่กำหนดให้โปรแกรมที่กำลังใช้อยู่สามารถ เรียกโปรแกรมอื่นมาทำงานได้ เช่น ในขณะที่กำลังใช้โปรแกรมประมวลผลคำพิมพ์เอกสารอยู่ เราสามารถสั่งให้โปรแกรมประมวลผลคำนั้นไปเรียกโปรแกรมตรวจเช็คตัวสะกดมาทำงานได้ โปรแกรม ประมวลผลคำนั้นจะเรียกว่าโปรแกรมแม่ (parent program) และโปรแกรมตรวจเช็คตัวสะกดเรียกว่าโปรแกรมลูก
